The Honolulu Academy of Arts and Bank of Hawai’i is hosting a two day festival from January 15 through 16 to celebrate the New Year.  The festival, which is geared toward families with younger children, will include a wide range of arts and crafts activities, martial arts, and dragon and lion dancing.  They will also host a Chinese lion pole performance.

The Honolulu Academy is located near the Ala Moana State Recreational Area, about thirty minutes from Ko Olina.  The festival will last from 11 am to 5 pm each day, and admission is free.  For more information, check out www.honoluluacademy.org.

The Hawaii Theatre will host the new Shanghai Circus from January 13 through 15.  This circus will feature a variety of acts not included in a traditional circus, including human pretzels, dragon dancers, and an extravagant Chinese acrobatic troupe.

The Shanghai Circus is free and open to the public, beginning at 5 am.  The Hawaii Theatre is located in Honolulu, about thirty minutes from Ko Olina.  For more information, check out hawaiitheatre.com.

The Sony Open is Hawaii’s largest annual sporting event which will feature competition between over 140 golfing professionals.  Hosted at the Waialae Country Club, about thirty minutes from Ko Olina, the Sony Open is the first full-field tournament of the PGA tour season.

The Chinese New Year will be celebrated in Chinatown at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, about 30 minutes from Ko Olina, on January 6 and 7.  Festivities will last from 10 am to 10 pm and will include a variety of events and exhibitions, including martial arts demonstrations, fortune telling, arts and crafts, and an array of traditional foods and dances.

Tonight, the Pearl Ultralounge in the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, about thirty minutes from Ko Olina, will be hosting a luxurious New Year’s Eve celebration.  Festivities will include champagne, party favors, a balloon drop, and hors d’oeurves as Hawai’i rings in 2012.

Commentator Bill Maher of HBO’s Real Time will be at Waikiki Shell in Honolulu for New Year’s Eve, about thirty minutes from Ko Olina.  Famed for his entertaining commentaries and vocal political opinions, he has earned 27 Emmy nominations over the years.

Jane’s Addiction will perform at Mele Kaliki-Rock-A, a rock performance hosted by 101.9, on December 30.  This alternative band has been named one of the top one hundred greatest hard rock artists by VH1.  Additional performers will include Primus and Mickey Avalon.

Renowned Japanese jazz trumpeter Eric Miyashiro will perform tomorrow, Thursday, December 22 at the Pearl City Cultural Center, about 25 minutes from Ko Olina.  His famed high energy performance will be complemented with a selection of contemporary jazz pieces by 3rd Stream jazz troupe.

Lani Misalucha will be performing at the Polynesian Showroom at the Holiday Inn Waikiki, about 30 minutes from Ko Olina, from now through next March.  In addition to a selection of her own signature songs, she will perform hits from classic artists such as Diana Ross, Celine Dion, and Tina Turner.

The Polynesian Cultural Center will transform into a Winter Wonderland Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from 6 to 8:30 pm from now until Dec. 23.  Decorated with lights, tinsel, and a life-size gingerbread house, the PCC will host a variety of Christmas themed events appropriate for all ages, including films and canoe rides.
