Firt Fridays in Hawaii
Check out First Fridays in Honolulu's Chinatown

First Friday’s are something to get excited about in downtown Honolulu!  Tomorrow (May 6) is the monthly event/party celebrating culture, art, shops, food and drinks… and toss in some live music. This homegrown street festival occurs on the first Friday of each month between 5 pm and 9 pm.

Downtown Honolulu is only a 30-45 minute drive from the Ko Olina Beach Resort. And after nine, the district gets a little more festive, thanks to a growing number of bars and clubs (20-30 or so now).

And all the fun is free. To check out all the goings on, check out the First Friday’s event calendar.

Disney cruise set to sail from Los Angeles to Hawaii in 2012

Yesterday Disney announced its 15-day Hawaii cruise aboard the Disney Wonder, set to sail April 29, 2012, and will help promote the August opening of its Aulani resort at Ko Olina.

The first Disney cruise to Hawaii will sail from Los Angeles on April 29, 2012 (reported by the Honolulu Star.) Estimates suggest the cruise will bring about 2,700 guests to the islands.

The Wonder will use a renovated, 50,000 square-foot Pier two-passenger terminal. Interior work on the pier should be complete by September and was “years in the making,” according to Dan Meisenzahl, state Department of Transportation information specialist.

A bit of Disney fun at Ko Olina should be fun for everyone!

Join in the statewide holiday and annual celebrations this weekend on Oahu and Kauai, honoring the birthday of Hawaii’s Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Celebrations started Thursday and will run through Saturday. Check here for Prince Kuhio events.

Hawai’i Magazine reports that “…Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole created much of the Hawaii the world sees today. A prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Kuhio was next in line to become king when Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1894 bringing an end to the Hawaiian monarchy. Despite the overthrow, Kuhio’s determination and dedication to the people of the Hawaiian Islands never wavered. “

Kuhio worked to preserve Native Hawaiian culture and practices as he served as Hawaii’s second congressional delegate from 1903 until his death in 1922. Kuhio helped create King Kamehameha Day on June 11, the only other state holiday dedicated to Hawaiian royalty.

Wind Power for Oahu and Ko Olina
Exploring added wind power on Oahu

The Interisland Wind Project is exploring expanded wind options on Oahu.

The study suggests adding more wind power, along with current wind power and 100 megawatts of solar power found on Oahu, could eliminate the need to burn 2.8 million barrels of low sulfur fuel oil and 132,000 tons of coal annually.

The island of Oahu is looking to be a bit “greener” with new energy options. Aloha!
