On July 6, 2009, Sea Life Park embraced the newest member to its ohana as Hiiaka, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The baby dolphin was named Waiohakaupo, which means joyous life and breath of the waters of Kaupo.
Weighing in at about 40 to 45 pounds and measuring 45 inches long, Waiohakaupo spends her time at her mother’s side nursing on an ordinary schedule under the watchful eye of park staff.
Sea Life Park commemorated the birth of Waiohakaupo with a special Hawaiian blessing ceremony on Thursday, July 30. Starting Thursday, August 6, 2009, staff will offer guided tours for visitors to see the new baby.
