The Kumu Kahua Theater will present “The Underneath” now through December 7.  The theater is located near Chinatown, Honolulu, about 30 minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas and Resort.

The mystery play follows a man trying to uncover his brother’s confusing story.  After a ten year absence, he is urgently called to return to Hawaii where he discovers a number of startling changes since his childhood.  Written by a Hawaiian-born playwright, Susan Soon He Stanton, the piece includes many local references, scenes, and characters.

Chef Mavro is a fine dining option located in the heart of Honolulu, just thirty minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas.

The gourmet Hawaiian-French fusion restaurant offers a menu inspired by Chef Mavrothalassitis’ native Provence.  The restaurant has accumulated a number of accolades, including a James Beard Award, AAA Five Diamond Status, and Gayot Three Toques 18/20 rating.

The most popular menu is a $95 four-course prepared menu with an optional $60 wine pairing.  Featured dishes include bacon crusted scallops, steamed snapper, curried pork loin, and a roasted pineapple with coconut sorbet.  Vegetarian alternatives are also available.

The Honolulu Museum of Art will host an exhibition, “The Nightscapes of Saito Kiyoshi and Kawase Hasui” from November 21 through January 18.  The museum is located in downtown Honolulu, about thirty minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas.

The exhibit will feature nighttime paintings from two renowned, twentieth century Japanese artists.  Each artist takes a unique approach to nighttime image portrayal, and their works contrast deeply.  The exhibit maintains a strong air of mystery as it tries to capture an elusive, haunting theme.

Admission to the museum costs $10.  The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  For more information, check out http://honolulumuseum.org/.

Located in Kailua, about 40 minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas and Resort, Cinnamon’s Restaurant is a casual eatery popular among locals and visitors alike because of its emphasis on fresh, quality ingredients.

Cinnamon’s is a 2013 Hale Aina Award winner for best breakfast.  Perhaps the results are unsurprising, due to its rich menu featuring signature eggs benedict, guava chiffon pancakes, and homemade cinnamon-macadamia nut rolls.  Hearty grilled breakfasts are also available, including a skillet breakfast, baja breakfast, and loco moco.  Many featured dishes include some local Hawaiian flair.

Bellows Field Beach Park is a popular Waiamanalo destination.  Located just 50 minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas and Resort on Oahu’s North Shore, this park has a number of comfortable picnic tables perfect for a midday lunch.

As one of Oahu’s many coastal parks, Bellows Field has an expansive stretch of white sand beach void of any grass or rocks and relatively calm swimming water.  The park tends to remain uncrowded, even during perfect weather days, so it has earned its name as a top family destination.

Admission to the park is free and open to the public daily.  Extensive parking is available on-site.

The Ward Theater will host classic Alfred Hitchcock films now through October 31 in the spirit of Halloween.  The theater is located in Honolulu, just half an hour from the Ko Olina Beach Villas and Resort.

Hitchcock is best known for his vivid and frightening filmmaking style and scary contributions to the film industry at large.  This film series will begin with The Birds, perhaps Hitchcock’s most infamous and spooky film.  Additional titles to be shown include Dial M for Murder and Rear Window.

Masa Yamaguchi’s photo exhibition, “Maui on my Mind” will be featured at the Canon USA Gallery in Honolulu, just thirty minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas, through October 30.

The exhibition features photographs from Haleakala and upcountry Maui areas with a strong emphasis on Maui’s abundant natural beauty and colorful flora.  Many featured scenes are from Maui’s off the beaten path landscape.  Originally born in Nagoya, Japan, Yamaguchi became inspired to pursue photography professionally while living in Hawaii.

The USS Arizona Memorial stands as a somber reminder of the tragedies of World War II.  Located in Pearl Harbor, just thirty minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas and Resort, the USS Arizona is a timeless memorial to the earliest victims of the war.

The memorial is built atop the fallen USS Arizona, a sunken battleship and final resting place for over 1,700 US soldiers.  The Arizona was fatally attacked on December 7, 1941 by Japanese troops.  In 1949, construction began to erect a memorial to honor the fallen, and today the memorial stands as a reminder of wartime chaos and post-war strength and recovery.

The Bishop Museum, located in Honolulu just thirty minutes from the Ko Olina Beach Villas, will host an exhibit titled “Nature’s Wonders” now through December 1.

The showcase will feature a number of spectacular natural phenomenon, ranging from iridescent butterflies to glittering beetle-shelled jewelry to a number of delicate, colorful aquatic fauna.  The exhibit features beautiful plants and animals, both in their natural state and as decorated pieces of jewelry or other accessories.
