Hike to the Makapu‘u Lighthouse (built in 1909)
Hike to the Makapu‘u Lighthouse

Looking for a break from the everyday? Check out the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail, a nice 2-mile loop within the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline with outstanding views of Oahu’s southeastern coastline (including Koko Head and Koko Crater.)

From the trail’s destination at Makapu‘u Head look for the historic red-roofed Makapu‘u Lighthouse built in 1909, which makes a stunning picture against the deep blue sea below. (Unfortunately, the lighthouse itself is off-limits.) On a clear day, you may even see Moloka‘i and Lana‘i.

The offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds, such as the ‘iwa, frigate bird, and tropicbird. This portion of the island tends to be hot and dry, and the vegetation includes low-growing kiawe and panini (cactus). The trail is exposed and is usually quite sunny and warm. So be sure to bring along sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.

Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy this hike and its wonderful views. More info at the Hawaii State Park’s website.

Live from the Lawn Presdent "Aerial Romance" Tonight
Live from the Lawn at Hawaii State Art Museum: "Aerial Romance"

Every first Friday of the month is “Live from The Lawn” at the Hawaii State Art Museum. Bit of a neat find – especially since it’s a FREE event to attend! Tonight’s show is entitled “Aerial Romance” and includes performances by Samadhi Hawaii, Hawaii’s own aerial troupe. They will perform aerial acrobatics suspended from the trees on the front lawn of the museum grounds. Sounds like a must see just for that!

Later, Jeff Peterson and his trio will also perform live music, joined by vocalist Starr Kalahiki, and the ukulele virtuosity of Taimane Gardner.

The events starts at 6 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m. Food and drink will be for sale on the lawn, and beach mats are provided; low beach chairs are welcome.

Location: Hawaii State Art Museum, 250 S Hotel St, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI
