Looking for a break from the everyday? Check out the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail, a nice 2-mile loop within the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline with outstanding views of Oahu’s southeastern coastline (including Koko Head and Koko Crater.)
From the trail’s destination at Makapu‘u Head look for the historic red-roofed Makapu‘u Lighthouse built in 1909, which makes a stunning picture against the deep blue sea below. (Unfortunately, the lighthouse itself is off-limits.) On a clear day, you may even see Moloka‘i and Lana‘i.
The offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds, such as the ‘iwa, frigate bird, and tropicbird. This portion of the island tends to be hot and dry, and the vegetation includes low-growing kiawe and panini (cactus). The trail is exposed and is usually quite sunny and warm. So be sure to bring along sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy this hike and its wonderful views. More info at the Hawaii State Park’s website.

I love seeing an eclectic mix of things to do near Ko Olina, and this week takes you from ballet to fun local products made in Hawaii at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.

First up — Romeo & Juliet with a twist as a ballet. This ballet interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet is choreographed by Robert Weiss, the Artistic director of the Carolina Ballet.
Show times: Saturday, August 20 at 7:30 pm & Sunday, August 21 at 2:00 pm
Tickets can be a bit pricey ($100 for best seats, if you feel like splurging), but you can find nice $35 seats for the show too.

Next up — Made in Hawaii Festival is all weekend from Friday, August 20 to Sunday, August 21 and only costs $4 for general admission. (Kids 6 years and younger get in free with a paid adult.) Looks like some awesome local food, books, gifts, fashions, plants, art, crafts, produce… the list keeps going!
The Festival attracts over 35,000 visitors, including buyers from around the world. Plus, the Festival will showcase multiple award winners on the Entertainment stage and Cooking Demonstrations by Hawaii’s top culinary artists provide on the stage in the Arena.
Definitely sounds perfect for a family and for only $4 a person!

Looking for things to do around Ko Olina this weekend? This concert sounded like fun…
Country recording artist Lee Greenwood, known for his anthem “God Bless the USA,” will headline the “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive!” concert honoring World War II veterans from 7 to 9:30 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Waikiki Shell.
The Hawaii event is part of an inaugural nationwide tribute to the “Greatest Generation” on the 66th anniversary of the end of the war, sponsored by historical organizations, military museums and memorials. (Last year Congress passed a resolution proclaiming the second weekend of August each year as “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive Forever Days.”)
Saturday’s concert will include: “Flags of Liberty” ceremony and entertainment by local performers and the National Guard 111th Army Band. A life-sized sculpture depicting the iconic Times Square kiss between a sailor and a nurse on Aug. 14, 1945 will also be on display at the venue.
WWII veterans will be admitted to the concert at no charge; email hispiritof45@gmail.com for free tickets. Ticket prices for others are $25 and $35 at the Neal Blaisdell Center box office and Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 800-745-3000.

Every first Friday of the month is “Live from The Lawn” at the Hawaii State Art Museum. Bit of a neat find – especially since it’s a FREE event to attend! Tonight’s show is entitled “Aerial Romance” and includes performances by Samadhi Hawaii, Hawaii’s own aerial troupe. They will perform aerial acrobatics suspended from the trees on the front lawn of the museum grounds. Sounds like a must see just for that!
Later, Jeff Peterson and his trio will also perform live music, joined by vocalist Starr Kalahiki, and the ukulele virtuosity of Taimane Gardner.
The events starts at 6 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m. Food and drink will be for sale on the lawn, and beach mats are provided; low beach chairs are welcome.
Location: Hawaii State Art Museum, 250 S Hotel St, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI

And don’t forget to bring in your blooming Orchid — you may win a orchid.
The show is this Saturday, July 30th from 8:30 am – 5 pm and Sunday, July 31st from 8:30 am – 4 pm at the Aina Haina Elementary School Cafeteria. For more information: http://kaimukiorchidsociety.org/
